Having the opportunity to build and run an online business is such an amazing concept and it also happens to be incredibly new. While it may feel like technology and social media have been around forever, it’s actually pretty crazy to think about how new it actually is.

 

The worldwide web became available in 1991.

Facebook debuted in 2004.

Instagram showed up in 2010.

The Digital Age began in the late 20th century!!!

 

 

Crazy to think about, right?!

 

So with the technology boom being so recent, it makes sense that not everyone understands or supports it. So when you find yourself building a business online, it is imperative to make sure you are surrounded by the right kinds of support.

 

So what does that support look like?!

 

Let’s break it up into 3 categories.

 

The first is a business coach.

 

To keep it simple, every entrepreneur needs a business coach. Having someone ahead of you in business to mentor, guide, and help you along the way is invaluable. When you invest in the right kind of support, your coach will help you grow your business in ways you can’t even imagine.

 

A good business coach will help push you outside of your comfort zone so you can achieve bigger goals. They will help you do things you never imagined to be possible and SO MUCH MORE! 

 

The second is business friends. 

 

If you don’t have any friends who are doing similar things to you, don’t worry! There are SO many ways to connect with and get to know some. 

 

Find a local entrepreneurship networking group (or virtual ones!).

Take a day or two each week to work at a coworking space.

Start a meetup group and post about it in local Facebook groups!

 

The relationships you will build with fellow creatives are absolutely invaluable. Prioritize making and building them! 

 

The third is your personal relationships (friends and family)

 

No matter how ya slice it, there are always going to be people who are important in your life who don’t completely understand your vision or what you’re doing with your business. Do not fret! 

 

Not everyone is going to understand…and that’s okay. Not everyone needs to understand.

 

What is important is that you create personal boundaries so that it doesn’t break you down or damage your relationship when a family member or friend says something like “when are you going to get a real job?”. Remember, these boundaries look different for every person so give yourself space to create your own! (For example, a boundary that I have in my relationship with my brother is I don’t give weight to comments he makes about my business. I smile and don’t let it affect me!). When we can set these kinds of boundaries, it allows us to continue the forward momentum in our businesses as well as our relationships, independent of one another.
